Client-engagement decision, not a Rye Valley decision. This was decided inside Michael’s consulting engagement with Emil Barr (founder of Flashpass). Emil is a client. He is not part of Rye Valley and does not make decisions for Rye Valley, and neither Flashpass nor anyone on Emil’s team is a Rye Valley entity or employee. Recorded here for Michael’s context only. Reclassified 2026-08-30.

Decision

Adopted a moment-based quarterly arc as the overarching strategy for Emil’s personal brand: one big coordinated moment per quarter, with Grig leading the macro PR narrative, Tatem engineering the organic social action underneath, and distribution driven by the moment’s own virality rather than Emil’s channels. The California billionaire tax protest was selected as the first campaign; Emil drops an op-ed timed to the stunt.

Context

Emil’s goals are investor/partner-facing (positioning for a Macy’s-type acquisition), not follower growth. Without an existing audience he can’t access podcast bookings on his own. The team needed a strategy that generates press reaching target audiences without requiring Emil to build a following from scratch. A contradiction also emerged: Emil told Grig he loved the civic chain/op-ed/midterms strategy but told Michael he wasn’t interested in the “root for me” angle. The moment-based model resolves this by removing Emil’s personal channels as the primary distribution mechanism.

Options Considered

  • Bottoms-up audience grind (rejected): Emil explicitly does not care about follower count; this would also take years to produce meaningful access to top podcasts and investors.
  • Pure PR placement approach (insufficient alone): CNBC, WSJ, op-eds help but aren’t compelling booking pitches without a live cultural moment or existing audience.
  • Decentralized social strategy (prior Tatem assignment): no clear success metric and limited leverage without a cultural hook.
  • Moment-based arc (chosen): generates press organically, fits Emil’s contrarian persona, creates authentic stories that reach billionaires/investors who can then open podcast doors Emil can’t access alone.

Consequences

  • Tatem presents the framework to Emil on 2026-08-13 using billionaire tax protest as the concrete example.
  • Need to define a success metric for Tatem’s work (article/interview count alone doesn’t capture impact).
  • Emil’s personal social accounts pare down to ~5 curated videos; LinkedIn and Substack become primary owned channels.
  • Grig sends Tatem the op-ed draft before the Emil call.
  • Team locks in the plan based on Emil’s reaction.
