Decision

  1. michaelhouck.co is the house. Personal site, one newsletter under Michael’s name, the bio-link destination for all social accounts. Founding Journey’s list (58k) ports into it and FJ retires as a publication.
  2. Hard Calls is Michael’s ethos and body of work, not a standalone brand. The doctrine (definition, five marks, currencies, memo), the Stack, Pro, the case files, and the eventual book live under michaelhouck.co. hardcalls.co redirects there (Clear pattern: atomichabits.com 301s to jamesclear.com/atomic-habits). No separate Hard Calls newsletter; the weekly case study is a format inside Michael’s newsletter.
  3. Hockey Stick is the Company Brain install, its own vertical. Max Kelly fronts it. Same offer, pricing ($12,500 base, $2,495/mo retainer), definition of done, and application-only rule as ruled 2026-08-08/09. Built the way Megaphone, Lore, and JOLT were: own magnet, own list, own site. Not attached to Hard Calls; the HC survey no longer upsells to it.
  4. The line (locked): “My best move was walking away from my nine-figure startup. I help founders make the hard calls.”

Why (the evidence that decided it)

  • Trends 2026-09-02: the Hard Calls concept has no search pull (“hard decisions founder” 0, “how to make hard decisions” 0); the specific calls do (“should I fire” 18.2 to 69.1 YoY, “when to pivot” 17.4 to 44.6). Demand for Michael exists (58k, the story); demand for the concept independent of him does not yet. A concept brand needs a demand curve it does not have; a person brand has one.
  • Every definitional brand Michael wants to be (Clear, Ferriss, Newport) built person first; the concept became the book. Clouse is the exception and only because “creators” had independent demand.
  • Personality is the defensible asset in the LLM-content era; a concept brand puts a wordmark between the reader and the face.
  • The brain does not follow from the decision doctrine, cannot be fed cold ad traffic as a $12,500 application-only product, and upselling it from a decision funnel is a brand hop. The Aug 26 thread (Blake, Ben, Michael) was right.
  • Michael’s own framing: any structure other than leading with his name was scar tissue from the Launch House hit piece; publishing weekly under his name is the only mechanism that moves that search page.

Rejected frames (do not reuse)

  • hardcalls.co as the house with Michael as the masthead (dies on six-platform social traffic landing on a wordmark).
  • Two sites for Michael’s own products (person page and product page both owning Pro): incoherent.
  • Three-site structure with HC upselling HS: cannot be fed traffic, cannot be fed from the funnel.
  • Holdco-level line (“I help founders build companies that work for them”): doesn’t bite, not tied to the journey.
  • “Runs without you” (Codie Sanchez claimed it 2026-09-18 event), “AI-native” (Lieberman), “one-person business” (Koe), “on your own terms” (Welsh; drop from all HC copy).

Tripwire

If within six months the case-study content has its own subscriber base arriving for the concept rather than for Michael, Hard Calls gets its own front door (hardcalls.co un-redirects). Reversal cost: a page move. Decided cold.

Consequences

  • Pro’s record row: “case files, monthly, inside Pro.” No newsletter excerpt promise.
  • HC survey routes: Pro (product fit), Michael’s newsletter (downsell). The system-fit route goes to Max’s Hockey Stick booking link until HS has its own funnel, then moves there.
  • All “install from $12,500” mentions leave michaelhouck.co/hard-calls copy; the brain is Hockey Stick’s to sell.
  • The Aug 28 “park Hockey Stick with a trigger” ruling is superseded: it launches as a vertical now.
