Client-engagement decision, not a Rye Valley decision. This was decided inside Michael’s consulting engagement with Emil Barr (founder of Flashpass). Emil is a client. He is not part of Rye Valley and does not make decisions for Rye Valley, and neither Flashpass nor anyone on Emil’s team is a Rye Valley entity or employee. Recorded here for Michael’s context only. Decision

Two aligned strategic decisions for Emil Barr’s personal brand:

  1. Pursue making Emil a recurring, go-to Gen Z voice on one outlet (Fox model: pitch producers, appear whenever Gen Z / wealth / aerospace topics arise, build rapport with the booking team)
  2. Pursue a Trump op-ed angle: write a piece praising one specific Trump policy, place on Fox Business, then engineer a Trump soundbite via non-journalist-accredited White House briefing attendees who can plant a question. Goal: get a public Trump endorsement of Emil that provokes Gen Z backlash and drives organic reach.

Context

Three op-eds are now in the data set. Work-life balance piece performed best (~600-700 new followers). Current piece (billionaires/immigration) at 735 comments in under 24 hours - decent but not a home run. Middle piece underperformed (weak headline + Iran attack news cycle timing).

Pattern identified: Emil’s strongest content calls out Gen Z to an older, critical audience that can’t articulate the critique from a Gen Z perspective themselves. The weakness: all support, no backlash. Not reaching younger audiences, which Grig flagged as a red flag rather than a positive signal.

Options Considered

  • Continue op-ed-by-op-ed strategy without a recurring outlet anchor - rejected as too dependent on individual piece performance
  • Focus on Tucker Carlson outreach - still in play but not an anchor; Tucker’s audience also skews older
  • Billionaire march / big event concept - still on the table as a “big thing” but not yet fully thought through

Consequences

  • Grig to clip Fox/media appearances and DM to younger creators via TikTok/X DMs to provoke reaction posts (short-term)
  • Grig to identify non-journalist-accredited White House briefing attendees (possibly paid) to plant Trump question
  • Content framework filter going forward: personal and emotionally provocative for Emil’s established audience, AND something that will provoke backlash from a new (younger) audience
  • Avoid publishing during major news cycles
  • Six op-eds currently in pipeline (The Dispatch, Washington Times, aerospace/philanthropy pieces); this strategy runs on top of existing pipeline over the next ~3 weeks
