Client-engagement decision, not a Rye Valley decision. This was decided inside Michael’s consulting engagement with Emil Barr (founder of Flashpass). Emil is a client. He is not part of Rye Valley and does not make decisions for Rye Valley, and neither Flashpass nor anyone on Emil’s team is a Rye Valley entity or employee. Recorded here for Michael’s context only. Decision

Emil’s brand strategy shifts away from direct social content and educator/influencer positioning toward earned credibility (press placements, speaking engagements) plus decentralized, subtle amplification via a creator/streamer network. Michael is thinking through tactics over the weekend using RV’s existing creator network as a test bed.

Context

Emil’s government contracting NDAs make any “building in public” approach impossible. He does not want to be seen as an educator or influencer; he wants others talking ABOUT him, not him talking about himself. His goal is to be perceived as “controversial but arguably a genius” for institutional backers (e.g. SoftBank), which he sees as coherent positioning ahead of eventually buying a legacy company with their backing.

Prior work on direct social content and paid influencer tweets (Jacob’s idea) was seen as transparent and unconvincing.

Options considered

  • Direct social / educator approach (prior direction): Rejected by Emil. NDAs prohibit “building in public”; educator frame conflicts with the institutional backer positioning he wants.
  • Paid influencer amplification: Already tried, felt unconvincing to Emil.
  • Press + speaking + decentralized creator network (chosen): Press carries earned credibility. Speaking: being invited = implicit endorsement by association. Creator/streamer network modeled on Kamala Harris grassroots online support and the John Kiriakou book campaign: winning respect from niche communities without demanding it directly.

Consequences

  • Press placements: target 1-2 high-end placements per week (already working well).
  • Speaking pipeline: continues as earned-credibility channel.
  • Decentralized amplification via creators/streamers: Michael to develop tactics this weekend using existing RV creator network as test bed. Streaming seen as most culturally sticky format right now.
  • Concept to explore: subtly involving creators who reach relevant niche audiences without making the endorsement feel purchased.
  • Prior positioning shortlist (four one-liners, 2026-08-05) may still be relevant but strategy frame around it has shifted.
