Client-engagement decision, not a Rye Valley decision. Cape’s own business decision, made by Cape’s leadership with Michael advising. Client-side people named as deciders are not Rye Valley team. Recorded for context only. Scoped 2026-08-30.
- Date: 2026-07-17
- Decider(s): Kai (Cape CEO), Ben Gusberg, Michael Houck (advisor)
- Status: decided
Decision
Cape is winding down with a two-track plan: (1) pursue acquisition by a frontier lab (OpenAI, Anthropic, Reflection AI) or specialized tool (Cognition, Listen Labs); (2) if no deal, shut down and return capital to investors. Quick market check, not a months-long process. Pair (lead investor) closely involved.
Context
Cape could not reach product-market fit as a GTM tool. Runway is limited. Key asset: Kai as AI-native CTO + Cape’s proprietary relationship network dataset (described internally as a “relationship action model” data collection engine).
Options considered
- Portfolio company merger (suggested by Mars investor): rejected by Kai and Ben
- Months-long acquisition process: rejected in favor of a quick market check
- Selling the engineering team only: rejected; pitch leads with founding team and learnings, not just engineers
Consequences
- Team not told anything until a specific plan exists. Business as usual.
- Ben drafting one-pager for Mars (investor) to share with labs: narrow sales doc to get people on a call, not a full deck
- Kai to compile 20-30 target company list; use Cape itself to find warm intros
- Kai will receive extra severance to explore Cape’s assets independently before job-searching
- If shutdown: be direct with team about support; don’t lead with founders’ emotional journey
- Daryl (contractor, Singapore) likely won’t travel with any deal
Follow-up (2026-08-01 monthly synthesis)
Resolved: by 2026-07-22 ([Weekly] Blake : Houck), Cape is confirmed being acqui-hired by an AI company, product abandoned, Ben’s personal involvement uncertain. The two-track plan worked as designed, track 1 (acquisition) landed. No open action remains on this decision.
Correction (2026-10-10, per Michael)
The 2026-08-01 follow-up above is wrong. No acquihire landed: labs liked Ben but not the co-founder pairing, talks produced nothing material, and Cape is shutting down around 2026-10-31 and returning remaining capital to investors. Ben is planning a creator-brand business; options doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sGnMwXt7lg8pHD31NnWo3UCK6PmRic4akvNRYQYp2n0
